Back Pain Q&A

When do I need back pain treatment?

There are a few signs that you should reach out for help with your back pain. These include:
  • Pain starting after an injury, like an auto accident or workplace accident
  • Severe pain lasting longer than two weeks
  • Pain suddenly worsening
  • Pain persisting after rest
  • Pain shooting down into one of your legs
  • Pain happening with tingling or numbness in your lower back, buttocks, or legs
  • Pain happening along with leg muscle weakness
More than 8 in 10 people experience back pain at some point in their lives, so it’s common to ignore the symptoms. But if you have any of the symptoms listed above, your back pain could be serious and requires expert care.

What causes back pain?

Back pain may develop due to auto accidents, other personal injuries, or degenerative changes in the spine with age. Common causes of back pain include:

Herniated disc

Spinal discs provide cushioning between your spinal bones, and a herniated disc describes one that develops a crack. This causes its inner contents to leak and exert painful pressure on the delicate spinal cord and nerves.

Degenerative disc disease

Degenerative disc disease is spinal disc deterioration over time. As the discs wear down, they thin and reduce the padding between your vertebrae. This can lead to vertebrae rubbing together, causing you pain.

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis happens because a spinal vertebra (one of the bones that make up your spinal column) slides forward onto the one below it.

Spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis is narrowing inside your spinal canal. This reduces the room your spinal cord and nerves have to “breathe,” squeezing them and causing pain.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common kind of arthritis. It happens when cartilage — the rubbery coating on the bones — slowly erodes. That causes bones within a joint to rub painfully.
